Portland is a small island linked to the mainland by a thin strip of pale sandy beach backed by a connecting road. This is the southern most point of Dorset and forms the heart of the World Heritage Jurassic Coastline. This is a great island to explore both historically and nature wise, where the crashing waves continue to reform the ever changing landscape; filled with reminders of long gone historical events. Whilst Portland is most famous for its grand, white stone (used in historic architectural construction including St Pauls Cathedral and The United Nations) it is also famous for its enormous and impressive harbour which successfully hosted several sailing events during the 2012 Olympic Games and now provides a watery playground for budding skippers.
Together with its popular sandy beach and neighbouring Weymouth resort, Portland is a tried and tested top class beach holiday destination. Browse the self-catering accommodation here and choose from pet friendly cottages, luxury apartments that are child friendly and also holiday cottages for couples on short breaks. If you're happy to look a bit further east along the Dorset coast there are plenty of apartments to rent in Bournemouth and Sandbanks ideal for couples, families with children or groups, with some boasting sea views and direct beach access.
