Summer is officially over… (some would say it never began!) and it's all hands on deck and back to the bump and grind. Some of you will cathartically plan next year's summer holidays to soothe your landing back to reality, while others will move into the next season of autumn with a sigh of resignation. Well, maybe... it's not all over just yet.
Autumn is full of surprises and even if the temperature does drop a little (I can hear you laughing again), there are still some fabulous weekends to enjoy by the sea, free of all the crowds and of course it won’t cost an arm and a leg. Think of bracing autumnal walks by the sea, wrapped in your woolies, accompanied by your faithful hound (and the rest of the family of course). Then, after being infused by the elements you can all tumble back into a cozy cottage, get into your most comfortable clothes and enjoy a glass of mulled wine or a hot toddy whilst perched next to an open fire.
If you're partial to a bit of decadence then add a hot tub to the equation and you’ve got the perfect autumn short break by the sea. Or maybe a relax in the hot tub after dinner, wine in hand, under a starry sky with just the sound of the wind and waves in the distance. Sound inviting? Well, we know just the type of holiday home in Sussex where you can experience this and more.
For those who want the “beachfront, five star all the way” experience, then Angmering on Sea will be right up your street. The accommodation in Angmering is luxurious and large, but when rented outside of the peak holiday season and split between couples or friends becomes a completely viable option. These beach houses in Angmering have no expense spared and are located right on the seafront with private access to the beach. The views are incredible and because the beach actually belongs to the local residents it is practically empty. Most of the beach houses are pet friendly and include hot tubs and open fires.
Some of these glamorous short break holiday pads sleep as many as sixteen guests, so by splitting the price it makes it more economically viable. The local village offers some nice pubs and cafes for meals out, or you might like to consider an in-house chef one night if you have a special occasion celebration. Either way, these beach houses work just as well for family friendly Sussex holidays as they do for group holidays with friends or couples.
If you want something a little more bohemian and trendy then Camber Sands is a great beachside hang out. It's considered one of the best beaches in the South East, due to is vast amount of glorious pale golden sand and wild dunes. Windsurfers and kite boarders love this beach, sometimes creating a horizon dotted with colourful sails. It's quite an inspiring site.
That said there is more than enough room for families to enjoy this enormous stretch of sandy beach. As it’s out of season dogs are also welcome all along the beach ensuring your precious hounds enjoy their autumn break as well. There are some hearty beach cafes, restaurants and gastro pubs serving a variety of great grub and the social vibe is relaxed and always-on trend.
There are houses right on the beach here too so this is the perfect place for a getaway free of cars where you can enjoy direct beach access. Of course the historic town of Rye is just down the road if you want a bit more action. In fact, you might even like to base yourself there, where the culture and social scene offers galleries, craft shops, gastro pubs, bijou restaurants and cool bars. Camber Sands is just minutes away and makes for a great destination for a bracing coastal trek with a pub lunch stop-off to break-up the walk.
If what you want is to truly escape the land of the living then head for tranquil Pevensey Bay where you will experience abundant natural beauty, a totally un-spoilt beach and loads of wildlife. There are many beach properties here that offer direct access to the pretty beach. Again if you want a little more jazz then Eastbourne is only a short drive away and fully loaded with cultural and attractions and shopping malls.
The last seaside destination on our list that weathers well in autumn is West Wittering. This is for those who savour the nostalgia of the classic British seaside resort that hasn't lost its wild side. It has a beautiful blue flag beach that is fringed with dramatic dunes and has great facilities, especially if you're into windsurfing. Beyond the beach you’ll find salt marshes and wetlands where teams of sea birds swoop and dive across the sky all day. The majority of the beach homes here are close to the natural harbour and offer fabulous views. Chichester is the main town and is renowned for its quaint cottages and old gastro pubs, many of which offer real sole food
So there you go… autumn in Sussex is a great way to beat those post summer blues.
