Devon is famous for its historic ports and fishing villages not to mention world class surfing beaches and an abundance of coastal paths.
Devon’s coastline offers a swathe of relaxed southern seaside resorts with their balmy, mild climates and the wilder Atlantic coastline to the north, perfect for adventurous families and surfers alike.
Devon is a popular location for South West group holidays, be it a water-sports holiday or a special occasion break. One option available is Slapton Sands near Torcross, a spacious beach in South Devon offering large group accommodation near the beachfront.
Slapton Sands is actually made mostly of shingle, which creates a crystal-clear water quality reminiscent of the Caribbean in the summer. It’s a very safe, organised beach with great facilities including beach cafes and ice-cream outlets.
If you like the idea of visiting the English Riviera but don’t want the crowds, try Babbacombe which lies on the other side of the headland east of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham. Babbacombe Beach is a lot calmer and possesses an authenticity that these Riviera resorts no longer enjoy.
A little further south you’ll find Salcombe, a bustling town with a trendy atmosphere and a top quality beach called South Sands. Salcombe town is filled with restaurants and shops and there is much to do in the way of cultural, outdoor and water activities.
One of Devon’s most popular northern beaches is the wild and woolly Woolacombe Beach. You can actually get lost on its mile long perfect dunes and golden sand, perfect if you’re on group holidays in Devon.
Thanks to its abundant rock pools it is still very family friendly and most of the time the waves are appropriate for the younger less experienced surfers with a lifeguard on patrol during the summer months.
Woolacombe’s neighbouring beach is Saunton Sands, which lies on the other side of Baggy point and is much the same in terms of its size and beauty. Groups with dogs in tow will be glad to know Saunton Sands is dog friendly, so no need to leave your trusty hounds behind.
Two other beaches nearby include Croyde, which is a quarter of the size but a great place to drop off trendy teenagers, and Westward Ho, where there is no end of entertainment on offer as well as the beach itself.
